Dear Sehmat Khan,
Not every soldier wears a uniform. The uniform does not make you a soldier. Your courage, bravery and presence of mind do make you one. You do not always have to be at the forefront to be a part of war. War is not only won by the soldiers fighting on the frontlines but it is won by the sacrifices of all those whose names have never been mentioned in history. Heroes who go unsung are the keys to many locks which were never mentioned in history.
You were just a student at Delhi University, hardly 20 when you sacrificed your innocence, dreams, and life for your nation. You accepted the proposal of marrying someone on the other side of the border for the sole purpose of spying on them. A girl with absolutely no experience in spying took the risk of going into the enemy's territory even after knowing that she may never be able to make it back home to her country.
There have been times when we all doubt our abilities, but never even once did you doubt your abilities. Having thoughts about giving up is natural and when things become difficult, people do give up. But even at your lowest point, you decided not to give up you continued with your training because you knew that if you took a step back it might make situations worse for your country.
Within 1 month you trained yourself to do things you never
did before. From learning martial arts to morse code to using a gun to knowing
about various poisons for killing people if the need ever arises. You learnt it
all within a month’s time whereas people spend years training themselves to
become a field agent. More than
preparing yourself physically, you need to prepare yourself mentally.
“Lagan ki baazi hai
Chott bhi taazi hai
Laga de daav
par dil
Agar dil raazi hai”
Going from Sehmat ‘Khan’ to Sehmat ‘Syed’ was not only about
marriage, but it was much more than that. It was about putting your duty for
your nation before yourself. It was about being loyal and devoted to your nation
at any given point in time. It was about serving your country every moment of
the day. Being away from your country and yet not forgetting your roots.
“Tu hi meri
manzil hai,
Pehchan tujhi se
Pahunchu main jahaan
bhi
Meri buniyaad
rahe tu"
You were so sensitive that even the life of a squirrel
mattered to you. Taking someone’s life was unimaginable. But at the same time, if that is what it took to be committed to your duties towards your country,
you did it without giving it a second thought. You did it all for India. The
guilt did show on your face when you cried but it never came in between your
duty.
“Kahaan le jaye dil
Jo hadd hai behad hai
Lagan main jaan jaye
Vahi toh sarhad hai”
You never wanted to fall in love, but you could not stop
yourself either. You fell for Iqbal because of the little things he did for
you. Even after being in love with your husband Iqbal, you did not hesitate before
pointing a gun at him. Not even for a second did your hands shake. You always
kept your duty over yourself.
“Watan ke aage kuch nahi
Khud bhi nahi“
You will always be remembered as the girl who sacrificed
everything she could for her country. The girl who chose her country over love
and her duty over anything. The girl who was determined to serve the country not
because it was her father’s wish but because she felt a sense of pride in it. The girl who took up the responsibility of national security at the age of 20.
“Main rahoon ya na rahe
Koi nishaan mera
Mehfooz haathon main rahega
Yeh jahaan mera
Ae watan mere watan”
